At The Shrubbery, preparation for the 11+ entrance examinations is a proud and long-standing tradition. Yet, we recognise that no single pathway suits every child. Our commitment is to the success of each individual pupil, supported through precise tracking, tailored guidance, and a deep understanding of every unique learning journey.

A New Era of Preparation: Our Enhanced 11+ Programme
This academic year marks the launch of our refined and strengthened 11+ Scheme of Work — a comprehensive programme designed for depth, rigour, and dynamic learning. Our highly experienced teachers introduce essential 11+ skills from Year 2 onwards, through dedicated weekly sessions that ensure early exposure and sustained development.
Preparation is both targeted and structured to ensure steady progression throughout the preparatory years:
- Years 4 & 5: Dedicated after-school tuition reinforces core learning. These focused sessions provide pupils with the opportunity to refine their techniques, build confidence, and consolidate key skills.
- Year 5: Specialist preparatory work is fully integrated into the school timetable, intensifying in the summer term with targeted lessons leading directly into the examination period.
- Year 6: The autumn term begins with additional 11+ sessions, offering a comprehensive review and refinement of all key components ahead of the examinations.
A wide range of carefully selected resources supports our pupils, targeting the core competencies of the 11+ examinations — including vocabulary development, comprehension, numerical reasoning, and non-verbal problem-solving.
Precision-Guided Development
Our approach is defined by precision and insight. Using GL English and maths assessments and Cognitive Abilities Tests (CATs), we evaluate each child’s potential and identify individual areas for development. These assessments allow us to:
- Pinpoint every pupil’s true academic strengths and specific learning needs.
- Map out the most effective pathway towards future success, including grammar school candidacy.
This data forms the foundation of individual development profiles, enabling teachers to plan and deliver personalised next steps that maximise progress and confidence.
We also invest in advanced online learning platforms, accessible from Year 3 onwards, which allow pupils to continue developing key skills in maths, English, reasoning, and problem-solving at home. These platforms provide real-time performance insights, empowering teachers to deliver precise, responsive feedback.
